At the age of 18, I had to leave Sicily to look for work elsewhere. But, over time, I realised that this land had never left me. Very early on I felt the burning need to go back there, and every time I had the chance I did so. Starting in the late 1980s, I began exploring this territory, discovering its magnetic strength and establishing a connection with it that is still solid today. I have observed, investigated and confronted it, trying to understand it through the means most congenial to me: photography. This is how I have been able to discover and give a form to the many aspects that together make up Sicily.
The images you find in this book do not reflect an ambition to tell the whole story of a land so rich in history and contradictions, an authentic island-world, but are simply a selection of photographs from the various projects devoted to Sicily that I have done over the years and that, taken as a whole, reflect my vision of the region. And here we should probably put Sicily in the plural and speak of Sicilies, because this is an extremely characteristic and at the same time variegated region, rich in layer after layer of history and a complex anthropological and social structure. In this sense I have attempted, with my various labours over the course of many years, to construct a visual narrative that is complex and reflects the specific features of the territory. As Bufalino says, “That’s not all, there are other Sicilies, I will never stop photographing them…”.
